Temporary childcare services are available to families who do not require a nanny on a permanent basis.

North Shore Nannies covers assignments from a minimum of 4 hours to as long as several months. Families utilize our services under a variety of circumstances:
  • Hourly, daily, weekly assignments
  • Overnight and vacation care
  • School holidays
  • Substitute caregivers
  • Summer nannies
  • Post-natal care
  • Hotel sitting
  • Special events
Why are we trusted?
All of our nannies must complete an intensive screening process. Through extensive checks and interviews, nannies must display proven ability to work successfully in a wide variety of childcare situations.

Steps to arrange a temporary nanny in your home.

1 - Tell us about your family.

First time users of our service complete an introductory intake with an agency staff member to make sure we thoroughly understand your situation. We'll need about 10 -15 minutes of your time over the phone. It's helpful to be prepared with the following information:
  • Name & address
  • Your contact information - phone numbers and email address
  • Children's names and date of birth
  • Any special needs, allergies, medical or behavior issues
  • Any pets in your home

2 - Review our temporary placement policy and submit your agreement by email.

3 - Set your schedule.

Childcare requests require a lot of administrative effort. The earlier you can plan the better. You may call or email us. Here is what we will want to know:
  • Dates needed
  • Start and end times
  • Anything that is special about this assignment

4 - We arrange for your nanny.

After matching your needs with available nannies, we confirm the placement by phone or email. Expect a call from the nanny to confirm and receive necessary directions.

5 - Some guidelines for planning ahead.

Book one week in advance to ensure service, but special situations can usually be accommodated. To be assured of Saturday night service, we suggest calling no later than Wednesday. For more assignments that require a block of one nanny's time, we require a longer advance notice.

Temporary Nanny Rates
  • By the hour: $12 (4 hour minimum)
  • Overnight: $120 per night plus $5 for each additional child
  • Newborn care: $14 to $18 per hour with the nanny
  • Hotel Sitting: $14 per hour (4 hour minimum) plus parking
Agency Placement Fees

Client families have two options when arranging for temporary placement services:
  • Pay as you go: $25 per visit (up to 24 hours)
  • Annual membership: $325 one-time fee covers all your temporary placement needs for one year. This is the most cost-effective option for families who need multiple day or week coverage or who expect to use a temporary nanny at least twice a month.
Additional services include:
  • Same day service: $15 added to the above fees for job orders received and filled on the day service is requested.
  • Group care or special events: Rates are negotiated based on the setting, the number and ages of children and any special needs of the client.
Agency fees for temporary placements are charged to a credit card account. We accept American Express, Master Card and Visa.

Q. Can I get the same nanny every time?

A. We try to be as consistent as possible, but cannot guarantee the same nanny each time you call. Your schedule and a particular nanny's availability will not always match. Our recommendation - get to know a few nannies with which you are comfortable. Within a small group of preferred nannies, we are typically able to be quite consistent with placements.

Q. Can I meet the nanny ahead of time?

A. Since temp nannies work by the hour, they are not available to interview for every short-term assignment. You will have an opportunity to talk with them on the phone and we recommend scheduling extra time into the first assignment. This way you have ample time to speak with and discuss particulars before tou have to leave.

Q. Do you provide emergency back-up care?

A. This is not a service we offer. Our nannies tend to be fully booked ahead of time. Our office is not staffed late at night or very early in the morning to handle requests on very short notice. Please do not rely on us in these cases. You are welcome to see if immediate placement is available. If we can accommodate, we are happy to help out.

Q. What about if my child is home sick from school or day care?

A. We do not provide care for sick children. The risk of a nanny becoming ill and/or spreading illness to other homes is too great.

Q. Can I ask a temporary nanny to drive my children to school or activities?

A. Yes, if the driving is local and your family vehicle is available for their use. Please let us know ahead of time if driving is a part of the assignment.

Q. Is tipping expected?

A. Tipping is entirely at your discretion. Certainly it is appreciated by the nannies. If you like someone and want to have him or her back, we recommend showing your appreciation.

Tips for when a temp is in your home

When a nanny is new to your home and children, please allow at least 15 minutes of transition time to review all information the nanny will need to effectively care for your children while you are away.

Make sure to leave emergency contact information.

Prominently display the following contacts by all telephones
  • Home address
  • Home phone number
  • Local police department
  • Local fire department
  • Poison control
  • Pediatrician emergency contact
Leave location and phone number of your destination as well as appropriate cell numbers.

In case you cannot be reached, leave the name and phone number of a close relative or neighbor who could help out in an emergency.

Review any special needs and circumstances with the nanny.
  • Is anyone on medication?
  • Are there any allergies?
  • Are there any behavior issues?
  • Does a child require a special comfort object?
What household rules or routines are important for the nanny to know?
  • Is TV allowed? How much or what shows/channels?
  • Is bedtime strict or flexible?
  • Is food limited to certain areas of the home?
  • Do school-aged children require homework supervision?
